Today, I’m remembering a song my grandmother used to sing to me and my mother and I sang it together forever…
I just took a peek in the pantry
And there on the row of shelves
sat a row of pies
that would be a surprise
to the Mince Pie King himself.
My grandma is here and my grandpa,
my cousins and Auntie May.
What is it about?
We’ll soon find out
for tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day.
Happy day before Thanksgiving to all!
Love that – Happy Thanksgiving – you made me feel Great1
Thanks, Tucky! Happy Thanksgiving!
That’s been our family thanksgiving song that my grandmother always sung. I’ve been searching for years to find out more about the song. Your only the 3rd person I’ve found that knows this song. Here’s how my grandmother sung it.I just took a peak in the pantry,
And spied on the lower shelf.
A long row of pies,
That would be a surprise.
To the mince, pie prince, himself.
♫
And up on the next shelf above them,
Were cakes so round and white.
And ready to roast,
Big enough for a host.
Was the turkey a wonderful site.
♫
On the floor were nuts in a basket,
A jar full of cookies too.
And up very high,
I could certainly spy,
The fruits and the candies too.
♫
My grandma is here and my Grandpa,
My cousins and Auntie Mae.
What is it about?
Can you not find it out?
For tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day.
How delightful! I was singing the song to my granddaughter the other day & wondering about it. I was going to google it & see where it came from. I’ve never heard the other verses & I love them. My grandmother sang me a couple of other songs that I have tried to trace through the years that I know were old songs passed down. I found a little bit, but not much. Trying to keep the oral traditions going! Thank you so much for sharing – if I find out anything, I’ll let you know.

Interesting that it is from Kentucky, where my father’s family is from. I heard the song from my maternal grandmother, whose roots go through the south to Texas to Oklahoma. The song evidently was one of those that was sung a lot at some time.
